Egypt’s Commitment to Supporting Nile Basin Countries Through Development Projects


Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hany Sewilam announced Egypt’s ongoing support for Nile Basin countries through various development projects. These initiatives include rehabilitating waterways, constructing rainwater-harvesting dams, drilling solar-powered groundwater wells, and establishing river docks and rainfall forecasting centers.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the minister emphasized the critical importance of Nile water to Egypt’s national security. Sewilam made these remarks during a youth forum at the Olympic Center in Maadi, part of the Youth Diplomacy Training Program by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This event concentrated on sustainable development, water resource management, and the youth’s role in environmental sustainability within Egypt Vision 2030.

The irrigation minister expressed gratitude to Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy for organizing the program aimed at preparing young leaders to understand national issues, especially the water crisis
impacting citizens. Sewilam outlined the state’s efforts to secure water resources and the modernization happening within the Ministry under the “Second Generation of the Egyptian Water System (2.0)” initiative.

He reiterated Egypt’s steadfast stance on the Nile, based on international law principles for shared rivers, and highlighted Egypt’s approach of dialogue and cooperation with Nile Basin countries to achieve shared interests. Sewilam underscored the Nile’s significance to Egypt’s water resources and confirmed the state’s refusal to compromise on its water rights or accept any infringement on its allocated share.

The minister also detailed the second-generation irrigation system’s main pillars, which include modern technologies, digital transformation, mathematical modeling, digital applications, and satellite imagery.
