Egypt, US Discuss Middle East Escalation and Regional Stability

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty engaged in a phone conversation with Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos to review recent escalations in the Middle East.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the dialogue was part of ongoing coordination between Egypt and the US on regional issues, focusing on the situations in Sudan, Libya, the Great Lakes region, the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Horn of Africa, and Egypt's water security. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of regional and international cooperation to de-escalate tensions and prioritize diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflicts.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's stance on Sudan, rejecting any actions that compromise Sudan's unity or territorial integrity. He advocated for a humanitarian truce that respects Sudanese sovereignty and supports its national institutions. Additionally, he stressed the need to differentiate between national institutions and armed militias, while acknowledging the US decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood group in Sudan as a terrorist organization.

In the context of Libya, Abdelatty confirmed Egypt's support for maintaining Libya's unity and stability. He called for a Libyan-led solution that respects the country's sovereignty and facilitates simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. The call also covered the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty opposed recognition of 'Somaliland,' emphasizing its violation of international law and impact on regional stability.

Regarding the Great Lakes region and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Abdelatty expressed Egypt's support for peace and reconciliation efforts. He highlighted Egypt's dedication to promoting security, stability, and good neighborliness, and its willingness to cooperate with international partners to sustain peace agreements.

On the topic of Egypt's water security, Abdelatty underscored the significance of the Nile River, rejecting any unilateral actions affecting it. He praised US efforts in promoting peace and stability and advocated for collaboration with Nile Basin countries based on international law principles.

Boulos acknowledged Egypt's role in regional security and stability, appreciating its efforts to advance political settlements in the Middle East and Africa. He expressed a commitment to continued coordination between the US and Egypt on shared regional and international concerns.
