Egypt to Assume Leadership of African Union Peace and Security Council

Cairo: Egypt will assume the presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) starting February 1 for a month.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Egypt’s chairmanship comes at a critical time, as Africa faces mounting security, political, and development challenges. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs issued a press statement on Saturday, January 31, 2026, highlighting the complex regional and international circumstances that necessitate strengthened cooperation and coordinated efforts to address these issues.

During its tenure, the Egyptian presidency will focus on a wide range of urgent political, security, developmental, and environmental issues. The presidency aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Peace and Security Council as the principal body responsible for maintaining stability and security across Africa.

This will be achieved through a comprehensive approach focused on strengthening the continent’s peace, security, and governance structures, supporting conflict resolution, promoting stability, and advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for development.
