Egypt Lauds UN’s Role in Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development


Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, have expressed their appreciation for the United Nations’ pivotal role in fostering peace and sustainable development both regionally and internationally. This commendation was made during a meeting with the heads of executive boards of several UN agencies, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UN Women, and the World Food Program (WFP).



According to State Information Service Egypt, the ministers praised the UN’s development projects across Egypt and discussed strategies to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the UN’s specialized agencies. Key topics included joint efforts in food security, health and education system development, water security, services for children in vulnerable communities, and women’s empowerment. They emphasized the importance of women’s increased participation in the economy and leadership roles.



The Foreign Minister highlighted the significance of the UN delegation’s visit, coinciding with the UN’s 80th anniversary, marking the strategic partnership between Egypt and the UN amid regional geopolitical tensions and economic challenges. Abdelatty noted Egypt’s significant role in international engagement, hosting 38 UN offices with over 2,300 staff members, and reiterated Egypt’s belief in multilateralism for stable international relations.



Dr. Mashat outlined Egypt’s economic reforms and sustainable development efforts, emphasizing the UN’s critical role in supporting Egypt’s national development aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Additionally, Minister Abdelatty discussed Egypt’s efforts in supporting civilians in the Gaza Strip, stressing the importance of humanitarian aid delivery and preparations for the upcoming International Conference on Early Recovery, Reconstruction, and Development in Cairo. He underlined Egypt’s commitment to ensuring effective UN participation in supporting regional reconstruction and stability efforts.
