Egypt and IFAD Explore Expanded Partnership to Boost Food Security

Cairo: Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom engaged in discussions with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to explore avenues for expanding cooperation in food security initiatives and support for smallholder farmers. This initiative is part of Egypt's broader strategy to enhance economic empowerment and create employment opportunities through agricultural entrepreneurship.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting between Rostom and IFAD Regional Director Noufel Telahigue focused on aligning the partnership with Egypt's Economic and Social Development Plan and sustainable development framework. Rostom emphasized the agricultural sector's essential role in the national economy, highlighting its contributions to GDP, job creation, and food security. He reiterated the government's dedication to supporting farmers and small producers amid global challenges.

Rostom outlined that the Ministry is prioritizing public investments in crucial sectors like food security. He stressed the need for coordination among ministries and international partners to maximize the benefits of joint programs. Food security, he noted, remains a top priority for the government, which is working on strategic planning for agricultural projects and linking financing to developmental priorities.

The discussions also included plans to expand programs that support smallholder farmers and promote agricultural entrepreneurship to empower young producers. Rostom highlighted the Decent Life Initiative as a cornerstone of the government's efforts to develop rural areas and support small farmers. The initiative aims to transition citizens in 'Decent Life' villages from assistance to economic empowerment through employment programs and integration into the food processing value chain.

Telahigue praised the strategic partnership with Egypt, noting the progress in joint projects that support smallholder farmers and strengthen food security. He acknowledged Egypt as a key partner in Africa and the Middle East, underscoring IFAD's commitment to continued collaboration and development of joint initiatives.
