Aswan: Aswan International Airport witnessed on Sunday morning, February 8, 2026, the return of its main runway to service, following the completion of an efficiency upgrade project, after a suspension that lasted nearly five years.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the tarmac's development project came after detailed technical inspections revealed the need for conducting comprehensive rehabilitation works in line with approved technical requirements and standards. The Egyptian Company for Self-Maintenance of Roads and Airports (ECSM) carried out the project, which included upgrading the main runway to meet modern operational requirements and enhance the airport's readiness to receive various aircraft types.
The project is part of the State's plan to develop airports and improve operational efficiency nationwide. The runway officially saw the operation of its first flight at 7:00 a.m. Sunday, February 8, 2026, when an EgyptAir flight from Aswan to Cairo, carrying 142 passengers, departed the airport.
