Air Pollution and Waste Management Projects Prioritized to Enhance Quality of Life

Cairo: Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad announced that projects focused on air pollution control and waste management are top priorities to enhance environmental conditions and improve citizens' quality of life.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Awad stated in a recent announcement that a follow-up meeting was conducted for the Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project. This meeting, held in cooperation with a visiting World Bank mission, focused on reviewing progress in the Qalyubia governorate and supporting the development of an integrated waste management system.

Awad noted that the project is a strategic initiative aimed at improving air quality, reducing harmful emissions, and upgrading waste management infrastructure. This initiative aligns with Egypt's green transition and sustainable development goals.

The meeting also addressed developments related to the closure of the Abu Zaabal dumpsite. Plans were discussed to establish intermediate transfer stations in Marsafa and Khanka, along with proposals to expand private sector involvement in waste collection, transportation, and treatment.

Discussions included strategies for utilizing gases generated from the Abu Zaabal site for energy production. Additionally, plans were considered for transporting waste to the 10th of Ramadan complex, with the potential use of railways to reduce transport costs and carbon emissions.

Awad emphasized the importance of coordination among the relevant bodies to ensure effective project implementation and to maximize the impact of investments in the environmental sector.
