PM Reviews Progress on CBAM Plans to Boost Export Competitiveness

Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting on Monday, August 4th, 2025, to review progress on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Egyptian exports by reducing their carbon footprint.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Deputy Premier for Industrial Development and Minister of Transport and Industry Kamel El-Wazir stated that sector-specific plans and timelines are being finalized, following cabinet approval of the national strategy in December 2024. The first phase targets high-emission sectors and identifies priority exporters eligible for financial support to green their production lines.

Key measures include introducing environmental standards for exporters, developing a national carbon emissions registry, and launching an electronic system for monitoring pollutants and emissions. Egypt is also promoting the use of renewable energy, offering technical support and green financing, and preparing exporters for compliance with international environmental regulations.

Wazir highlighted that a permanent committee has been formed within the General Authority for Investment to raise awareness and assess industrial readiness. He emphasized that the government aims to help manufacturers align with global sustainability trends and gain better access to international markets.
