Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on Sunday, April 5, 2026, convened a Cabinet meeting to address the availability of strategic commodities in markets, the ongoing domestic wheat procurement season, and the state of the fertilizer distribution system.According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting included Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk and Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Alaa Farouk. Prime Minister Madbouli emphasized the importance of these regular meetings to secure a stable stock of strategic goods, aiming to stabilize markets and maintain price equilibrium amid regional developments impacting supply chains and financing.Madbouli highlighted efforts to ensure the availability of agricultural fertilizers and enhance the governance of their subsidy system to meet local demands, support Egyptian agriculture's expansion, and benefit farmers. The meeting also focused on preparations for the new domestic wheat procurement season.Supply Minister Sherif Farouk repo rted that the strategic reserves of basic commodities are sufficient for up to six months, with some nearing a year of coverage. The ministry aims to procure around five million tons of wheat during the current harvest season to bolster food security. Stocks of essential commodities, including wheat, rice, sugar, oil, pasta, and meat, remain at reassuring levels due to proactive government plans mitigating the global supply chain crisis and ensuring continued availability.Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk reviewed plans to maximize the 2026 domestic wheat procurement season's benefits, aiming to increase local production and secure strategic needs amidst regional challenges. The ministry plans to incentivize suppliers and farmers to deliver maximum local output through procurement pricing and measures enhancing efficiency and oversight.The agriculture minister proposed steps such as increasing collection points in key agricultural areas, activating cooperative assembly systems through local agricultural as sociations, and enabling direct collection from farmers to reduce transport and waiting times. He also noted the ministry's role in monitoring fertilizer distribution, with recent intensified activity across agricultural directorates and an extended disbursement period to ensure fair support delivery.The meeting further discussed measures to enhance the governance of the subsidized fertilizer distribution system, improve efficiency, promote modern technology in production and distribution, and maintain direct field monitoring to ensure fair distribution and prevent manipulation.
