New alamein city: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting at the Cabinet headquarters on Egypt's North Coast to discuss the development of the country's sugar industry. The meeting was attended by Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa el-Din Farouk, and other senior officials from the industry and agriculture sectors.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting focused on enhancing local sugar production and reducing dependency on imports to ensure a stable sugar supply in the domestic market. This initiative is especially crucial given the current global supply chain challenges. The government aims to expand sugar production by increasing the cultivation of sugar beet, particularly in areas managed by the Future of Egypt Sustainable Development Authority.
Mohamed el-Homsani, the Cabinet Spokesman, highlighted the discussion on developing related industries to maximize the benefits from sugar production. The meeting also addressed implementing environmental sanitation plans in sugar factories to align with environmental standards and ensure sustainability. Challenges faced by these factories and future plans for their modernization and expansion were also on the agenda.
Executive Managing Director of the Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, Salah Fathi, provided a presentation detailing the company's capabilities, including eight sugarcane processing factories in Minya, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, and Aswan. The company also operates an industrial complex in Giza specializing in refining sugar and manufacturing various products like chemicals, perfumes, and food items.
Fathi elaborated on the company's sugar production volume and its use of byproducts such as molasses and bagasse for producing ethanol, yeast, bio-fertilizers, and more. The company aims to increase sugarcane yield per acre and optimize factory capacity to meet national sugar demands. The presentation also outlined ways to improve farmers' financial returns and enhance investment outcomes from sugar production facilities.
