FM Calls for Global Financial Structure Reforms to Aid Developing Countries

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has emphasized the urgent need for global financial structure reforms to support developing countries. He highlighted the necessity for these nations to be included in global economic administration amidst increasing challenges such as climate change, rising sovereign debt levels, and high borrowing costs, all of which impede sustainable development.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty's remarks were made during a meeting with representatives of member states within the platform of borrowing countries. This session was co-organized by Egypt and Zambia, taking place on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Abdelatty underscored the significance of the platform's role in advocating for the interests of developing countries concerning debt issues in various international forums, including any potential intergovernmental negotiations on debt. He stressed the critical need for swift and collective action to reform the international debt structure, improve the debt sustainability of developing countries, and prevent a global debt crisis.

The meeting also addressed the advancement of the platform of borrowing countries, stemming from the 'Seville Commitment'. This commitment was adopted at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, held in Seville, Spain, in 2025. The platform's goal is to foster dialogue, exchange viewpoints, represent developing countries, and unify their positions on discussions related to sovereign debt.
