Cairo: Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Egyptians Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, held a significant meeting with Mr. Wamkele Mene, the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This meeting underscored Egypt's steadfast commitment to advancing African economic integration, boosting trade, and reinforcing continental cooperation.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's unwavering support for the AfCFTA Agreement, which was initiated during Egypt's leadership of the African Union in 2019. He highlighted Egypt's current role as the chair of the Agreement's Bureau, emphasizing its importance in driving sustainable development across Africa and aligning with the African Union's Agenda 2063 objectives.
The Minister also stressed the Agreement's potential in enhancing intra-African trade, facilitating commercial exchanges, and improving the global competitiveness of African products. He expressed Egypt's dedication to contributing to capacity-building and technical assistance for the AfCFTA Secretariat, noting Egypt's pioneering role in signing and ratifying the Agreement.
Furthermore, Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's ongoing efforts to support Africa's development agenda through its expertise in trade and development. He pointed out the training and capacity-building programs that Egypt provides to African partners, which play a crucial role in fostering economic integration and sustainable growth on the continent.
Mr. Wamkele Mene, expressing his gratitude for Egypt's continual support of the AfCFTA, praised the country's leadership in promoting African priorities regionally and internationally. He highlighted the various opportunities the Agreement creates across sectors and expressed his desire to enhance cooperation with Cairo to maximize the benefits for African states and advance mutual development goals.
Additionally, the Secretary-General briefed Minister Abdelatty on the key discussions and outcomes of the recent AfCFTA Trade Ministers' retreat hosted by Egypt, which took place from September 11 to 16, 2025.
