Egypt Among Best-Performing Countries in Tackling Global Energy Crisis

Cairo: The official Facebook page of the Armed Forces Spokesperson published a video titled ‘A Report on Energy Rationalization,’ highlighting the importance of managing state resources amid ongoing global crises and conflicts. The report said that the Egyptian state has taken a series of measures to protect its economy, resources, and citizens. It noted that the government’s decision to close shops, malls, and restaurants at 9 p.m. for one month was not easy, as it affected workers and business owners.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the report emphasized that the global crisis has forced countries-both large and small-to adopt difficult but necessary measures. Some have reduced electricity consumption, shortened working hours, or implemented remote work policies, while others have introduced strict fuel consumption regulations. The report stressed that Egypt, given its available resources, has so far been among the best-performing countries in managing the crisis and meeting the needs of various segments of society.

It also pointed to examples from other countries. In India, the crisis has led to severe shortages and long queues at fuel stations, with cooking gas becoming scarce. Pakistan has introduced a range of austerity measures, including reducing social gatherings, requiring 50% of government employees to work remotely on a rotating basis, and expanding distance learning in universities. In Sri Lanka and Slovenia, authorities have implemented fuel rationing and purchase restrictions. Even major oil and gas producers in the Arabian Gulf have been affected, with countries such as the UAE raising fuel prices by between 30% and 70%.

In Europe and other major economies, the situation has also been challenging. In the United Kingdom, reports indicated panic buying and fuel stockpiling, while in Germany and Austria, fuel prices have risen frequently. The United States has also recorded a significant increase in fuel prices since the outbreak of the war with Iran. The report noted that the repercussions of the war with Iran and its impact on energy markets have prompted many countries to take exceptional measures. It stressed that Egypt’s actions are consistent with global trends and aimed at balancing citizens’ needs with the state’s ability to sustain operations.

Meanwhile, the ongoing regional war involving Iran, its allies, and opposing forces including the United States and Israel continues to reshape regional security dynamics, with persistent airstrikes, rising maritime risks, and mounting pressure on global energy markets. Oil prices have surged amid escalating geopolitical tensions and concerns over supply disruptions. Brent crude rose to $141.36 per barrel on Thursday, its highest level since the 2008 global financial crisis, according to S and P Global.
