Cairo: Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shemi announced that an integrated executive plan has been developed in cooperation with the relevant authorities to ensure the readiness of affiliated companies to comply with European requirements related to the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) aimed at reducing industrial gas emissions and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian exports.
According to State Information Service Egypt, during an extended meeting to follow up on the efforts of the ministry's affiliated companies in this regard, Shemi emphasized the great importance of this mechanism, which the EU will apply to its imports, given its direct impact on the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, particularly in emission-intensive industries such as aluminum, fertilizers, and cement.
He explained that comprehensive awareness programs are being implemented to familiarize employees with the technical and regulatory requirements and their potential effects on industrial and export performance. Shemi stressed the importance of regularly measuring carbon emissions and improving environmental and production efficiency.
He pointed out that specialized working teams have been formed within companies to prepare carbon footprint reports in line with international standards, while workshops are being organized on carbon markets and green financing mechanisms to support the state's transition toward a green economy and sustainable development.
As part of these efforts, KIMA Fertilizers Company in Aswan continues to implement advanced projects to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency, including the KIMA 3 project for the production of nitric acid and ammonium nitrate, as well as a feasibility study for establishing a solar power station to provide part of its clean electricity needs.
The company is also setting up a modern liquefaction unit to utilize surplus carbon dioxide for industrial purposes. A comprehensive assessment of the company's carbon footprint is underway, along with efforts to integrate old and new production lines to enhance operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
He concluded that these efforts fall within the ministry's broader strategy aligned with the state's green transformation vision, which aims to enhance the global competitiveness of affiliated companies' products, increase reliance on renewable energy sources, reduce emissions across the industrial sector, and strengthen environmental sustainability and governance standards.
